About the Project

This type specimen booklet explores the Neutronic Rounded typeface designed by Mark Frömberg and Mingjo Ham 함민주 for their foundry, Hypertype.

This was a project for my typography class at BCIT where the goal was to create a type specimen booklet that demonstrated understanding of typeface anatomy, expressive layout structure & design, and booklet printing

Challenge

Create a type specimen booklet for a workhorse typeface while demonstrating an understanding of typeface anatomy and expressive layout structure & design. The biggest challenge was to design a booklet that had a unique and cohesive design. We also were required to print our booklet, which required extra attention to ensure the booklet presented well in both digital and physical formats. I added a self-imposed challenge where all booklet visuals would be designed with only the typeface and (if needed) very basic shapes.

Solution

I decided to go with a very simple color palette and design. When reading the name “Neutronic” it really screamed to me a bright green color, the color of text on the first computer monitors. I felt it was the perfect color that represented both the organic, cultural side and the precise, technological side of the typeface. The result was a black and white color scheme with a single lime green accent color. I also decided to design the booklets visuals using only the typeface and (if needed) very basic shapes. I felt that this was a typeface that could speak for itself, and I wanted to also challenge myself to create interesting visuals using type alone rather than lots of graphics.

Outcome/ Impact

The project’s challenges as well as my personal one put me into a structure that pushed me to think differently. This resulted in interesting visuals that I might have otherwise not thought of. It was a rewarding experience that impacted how I approached and continue to approach projects.
